Getting your finances straight before you separate

Most people know separation will be emotional. Fewer realise how much clearer the process feels when the numbers are organised first.

Money is one of the first things people worry about when a relationship breaks down. Often the worry is worse than the reality, simply because the picture is incomplete.

We regularly speak to clients who only discover what they own, and what they owe, when a solicitor starts asking detailed questions. By then, everyone is already under pressure. A bit of preparation earlier makes the whole process calmer.

Start with a simple list

You do not need a perfect spreadsheet. You need an honest overview. Work through the following and note what you can. Approximate figures are fine at this stage.

  1. Bank accounts (joint and personal): balances and where they are held
  2. Property: whose name is on the title, mortgage balance, rough current value
  3. Pensions and investments: recent statements, even if you have not looked at them in years
  4. Debts: credit cards, loans, anything owed to family or friends

Keep this somewhere secure. You may need to share it with an adviser later, but it is for your eyes first.

Do not make sudden moves

Closing accounts, emptying joint savings, or moving large sums without advice rarely helps. It can look defensive, erode trust, and create problems you did not intend.

If you are worried about money leaving the household, or bills not being paid, speak to a professional about sensible interim steps. There are legitimate ways to protect yourself. Guessing is not one of them.

How we help

Our financial work sits alongside wellness and legal support, not in a silo. The goal is a fair, workable outcome for you and anyone who depends on you, not a spreadsheet for its own sake.
